My Favorite Holiday Commercial This Year

I usually don't watch TV but my daughter got me to watch the last four episodes of The Voice. I never would have seen this commercial otherwise.... The first time I saw this commercial, I was crying. Kind of like that commercial from the Superbowl with the Clydesdale for Budweiser, remember???

I spent my night making the holiday paper bag pockets. It seemed like I made a lot more but apparently not!

Three more days until Winter Break! I'm looking forward to spending time with my family and catching up on some reading. My family will also find out more about my Dad's health status in the next few weeks, he's been undergoing tests the past two weeks. I'm trying to stay optimistic but the more I think about it, the "what if's" take over in my mind.

Paper Bag Pocket Tutorial

I had some requests for a tutorial on how I made the paper bag pocket.

I also added paper to the flap part (green patterned paper) and used a a patterned paper punch to get the scalloped edge. I hope the tutorial was helpful!

Monday Made It!

Hi There! I'm linking up with Tara from 4th Grade Frolics

As I've mentioned in other posts, I like to scrapbook and make paper crafts. Every year, I usually make some type of Holiday paper craft to give out to people at school. This year I decided to make little paper bag pockets to stuff with something. This is made out of a standard lunch bag that you can buy at Target.

unstuffed

stuffed with a candy bar

There's many possibilities for what you can put in the pocket. A nice note, candy, gift card, etc. SUPER easy to make! I'm not sure if any of my co-workers enjoy my paper crafts but I find the process of making the crafts therapeutic (a good outlet).

Currently December

I'm linking up with Farley from Oh' Boy Fourth Grade. It's a good thing Farley has this linky every month or I'd probably never update my blog the rate I'm going!

My daughter has a project due on December 17th but because of her good work ethic, she decided to work on it all Thanksgiving break. I must say, I'm fortunate that she's not a procrastinator.

This is my favorite time of year - the holidays!

About three weeks ago, I got that dreaded call on my cell phone from my mom, informing me my dad was in the hospital. He was having a hard time breathing so she took him to the emergency room. He had pneumonia, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and they found a spot on his lung. The spot on his lung is still to be determined since he had the pneumonia. Another follow up CT scan will be done in a few weeks. He has a coronary angiogram this Wednesday, which could possibly result in open heart surgery. It really made me sit back and think about how precious time is.

My favorite tradition for Christmas is Christmas breakfast with my family. There's nothing better than my mom's cooking! We all gather at my parents house and have a yummy breakfast and exchange gifts afterwards.

November Currently

Hi All! I'm linking up with Farley from Oh' Boy 4th Grade!

I don't like to cook or bake but I often pin recipes of items "I would make if I enjoyed baking" so here it is:

I wish someone would make those for me - LOL!

It's a typical Saturday in my household today: cleaning, doing laundry, taking care of all the household chores I can't do during the work week.

I got summoned for jury duty at the end of the month. I honestly thought I was exempt from jury duty for the rest of my life because I haven't been "summoned" for a LONG TIME! Yes, there is a story..... The last time I had jury duty, I got picked to sit on a jury. The trial was suppose to be short (two days they said but it turned into five). Well, on the third day of the trial I got VERY sick. Throwing up kind of sick. I was looking really green, in fact all the other jurors mentioned how bad I looked. So while we were waiting to be called into the court I thought it might be a good idea to mention to the bailiff that I wasn't feeling so hot and maybe I should go home.

After I spoke to the bailiff, I was asked to escort him to the judge's chambers - YIKES! I went into the judge's chamber and the two lawyers, the judge, the bailiff, and a court stenographer were all waiting for me. Long story short, I was told if I left they would have to call a mistrial since there was no substitute juror (remember, it was suppose to be only two days). They all agreed that it would be best if I stayed and they would provide me with a garbage can (thanks!) and if I started feeling really bad I had to raise my hand and they would call a recess. I survived the five day trial and honestly have never received a jury notice since. My family has joked with me all these years that I have a flag next to my name. So I was quite surprised to receive that in the mail yesterday.

My jury duty is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I'm thinking if I happen to get picked, that could really interfere with my Black Friday shopping!?! Oh well!

So, I gave up making coffee about three weeks ago! It was just taking too much time in the morning to make my "special" coffee. I also found that on most days I never even finished drinking my one cup of coffee because I was too busy at work. There have been days, usually on Friday's where I long for some coffee but overall I've been doing well without it.

I go to the gym three days a week and mainly focus on weights. My husband is the main gym member so I can't go unless I'm with him. As a family we have been consistently working out for three years. My goal is to add more cardio. I had to stop all cardio for a period of 7 months because of a foot injury and I still haven't lost the weight I gained from that. I really need to get moving more.

Enjoy your Saturday!

Monday Made It!

I'm linking up with Tara from 4th Grade Frolics

I made this Pantone color swatch calendar. My husband dragged me to Lowe's one day and I saw the paint swatch display and I instantly gravitated towards it. Here's the background....when I was studying graphic design in college I use to look through the Pantone color swatch books all the time. When I saw all the individual paint swatches I knew I would be making something out of them.

I guess making a calendar makes me feel more organized. This is the second over sized calendar I've made this year! All I used were the Pantone paint color swatches from Lowe's, black scrapbook paper, and the Cuttin Up Cricut cartridge to make the numbers and letters. Very easy and simple project!

Currently October

I'm linking up with Farley at Oh' Boy 4th Grade. I just love her monthly linky!

I'm starting to get excited about my fall break that is coming up next week. It's only two days off but boy, do I need it!!!! It's been a CRAZY few weeks at work. This year we are giving all the third - fifth grade benchmarks online. I can't even talk about it right now..... let me just say, that there's only one more day left!

I really want a massage so I can just relax. I actually have a gift certificate for a one hour massage that my hubby and daughter gave to me for my birthday in June but I've been too lazy to schedule an appointment.

Next week on my fall break I finally get some time off to spend with my daughter (she's 13). I think this entire school year I have only picked her up from school maybe 8 times! Last year I picked her up just about every day from school but this year has been so hectic and busy my husband has taken over. It makes me sad that I can't leave work on time to pick her up.

I guess my trick would be Google Forms. I've used Google Docs for some time now but never really took the time to explore Google Forms. I like that it turns everything into a spreadsheet form. It can be used as parent surveys, mini assessments (if students have access to a computer in class), online tests, anonymous surveys, etc.

Where did September go???

It seems each month is busier than the previous month. There's no slowing down in sight. I've been so incredibly busy at work lately. A lot of my home life has been neglected the past 4 weeks. I decided there is only so much I can do in a day and when it's time to go home, IT'S TIME TO PACK UP AND GO! The worst part is, I'm so exhausted when I get home I have no patience with the people that mean the most to me!

I went out for Dim Sum today and here's my fortune from my fortune cookie - you know I only keep the good fortunes!
It's a keeper!

I was introduced to this Ipad app Thinking Blocks recently, which is also available online.

It reinforces building models to go with word problems along with labeling items correctly. I find from working with students that a lot of the time they aren't even reading the problem at all.

I'm hoping that now that October is around the corner some cooler weather will soon follow!

Happy Labor Day! I'm joining Farley's linky this morning from Oh' boy 4th Grade!

My teenage daughter has been watching BBC Dr. Who since Friday night on Netflix. It's been a Dr. Who marathon all weekend! I just love those British accents!

Last night was the first night I slept 8+ hours straight in I don't know how long. It felt good! So far this school year has been one crazy school year! I feel like the minute my feet hit the school parking lot grounds, I'm off and running and I don't stop until I force myself to go home. The past four days have been the first four days since school started that I've been healthy! It started off as a cold and turned into a middle ear infection. I've never had a middle ear infection EVER! I never took any time off from work during the whole illness and I've been one tired puppy!

So the first long weekend with no plans other than some R & R and I get home from work Friday and the air conditioner in my house is BROKEN!!! I live in Sunny Arizona, remember?? It's HOT here! Thankfully a family member has a portable air conditioner not being used and my parents live near by. I've been hanging out at my parents house until night time and all of us are sleeping in the living room with the portable air conditioner. It should be fixed tomorrow!

My love yourself spot is self explanatory. I really need to work on the sleep one!

Wishing everyone a restful day off!

Week two done!

The first few weeks of a new school year is tough!!! It takes me about a month to get back in the swing of things again. Since I had to give two evening parent orientations for the new laptops, I had two 6:30am-7:15pm work days last week! Did I mention, I made 993 username/password cards for laptops and cards for the two online curriculum programs at my school as well as labeling all the laptops, chargers, and laptop bags. I'M TIRED!!

I have to say I have the best colleagues on the planet. They keep me smiling on the toughest days. They are also some of the best teachers I know!

I was super spoiled this week.....

As you know, I love my Starbucks drinks and two of my colleagues surprised me this week with two of my favorite drinks!

It's hard to believe next week will be the third week of school for me! I'm not planning on doing much today other than spending time with family and relaxing!

Week one

I survived the first week back to school! It feels like I never left. I'm the Instructional Technology Coach at my school. We give all the fourth and fifth grade students laptops. I spent all this week preparing the laptops. The students basically check them out like a library book. All the fifth graders received their laptops by the third day of school and next week is fourth grade. I got very little sleep all week! Since I was working late all week I got to see this (see below)

A sleepy pelican!

The pelican flew to the playground late in the afternoon after all the students were gone and took a nap under the ramada! Pelicans are not native to Southern Arizona. One of the other teachers called the Wildlife Foundation and they picked up the pelican. During the summer the pelicans migrate from Mexico to the coast of California and because of the strong winds from the monsoons they sometimes get off track. The pelicans that get off track in their flight end up dehydrated and the Wildlife Foundation nurse them back to health and then take them to San Diego to release them.

It was nice to see all the students again. It's amazing how much they grow during the summer!

Monday Made It!

I'm linking up with Tara from 4th Grade frolics. Here's my Monday Made It. I stayed late after school to get this done. If I do this again, it would benefit me greatly to have a yardstick or a ruler!?!

I've been wanting to make a giant calendar for quite some time now. I used painter's tape and chalkboard markers. I'm loving those chalkboard markers. I just need to find them in more colors!!

I just need to add the month above it and I will be done! I'd love to use Washi tape but I had to see if I could do a decent job making it out of something less expensive first!

Another school year. It's amazing how fast two months can go by. I'm linking up with Farley from Oh'Boy4thGrade. I just love her monthly linky!

I apologize in advance for typos and misspellings! I'm so sleep deprived right now. School officially started for me on Monday. I've been so BUSY and so STRESSED. I just have too much to do and not enough time. My sleep has taken the back seat in order to complete all I need to do.

So, it's rather late right now and I should be sleeping but what happens when you are stressed?? Insomnia! (don't worry, the kids haven't started yet). That's the worst thing! I think most of my items are self explanatory but I will write about my must haves:

1. New colorful pens!! I LOVE pens. In fact I love all types of stationary products. "Hi my name is Cindy, I'm addicted to stationary products". I was in Vegas over the summer and found a little shop in the China Town district that had 3 huge tables of journals and notebooks. It was pure paper heaven! My husband just could not understand why I had to touch and look at every notebook/journal. Well, lets just say I have many fun cute notebooks to last me quite a while. What goes best with notebooks/journals - PENS! I'm quite picky about my pens too. They must be extra fine tip and that is hard to find in fun colors.

Look at all those notebooks!

2. Lunch tote: I totally blame the fact that I must get a new lunch tote on my parents. When I was young it was a tradition they would buy me a new lunchbox every school year. Back when I was a kid..... Well, let's just say they don't make them like that anymore :(  I haven't found a new lunch tote this year. It's really making me feel odd this year. I got this idea after watching a news report on how unsanitary most lunch totes are that maybe I should go old school this year and put my stuff in a brown paper bag. Well, it's not working out so well.

3. Fast quick breakfast items. My drive to school is about 20 miles. Which means I leave my house early because I like to get to work early too. I'm one of those people that gets stuck in food ruts. I have the same thing every day for breakfast, I tend to order the same food item and never switch it up. When it comes to breakfast and work days, it needs to be fast and easy and quiet. I don't want to wake up my entire household since they are all happily sleeping when I get up. Over the summer I started making egg whites on toast. So all this week I've been making it the night before and just popping it in the toaster oven while I get ready. I can tell this type of breakfast isn't going to last much longer!

Well I'm off to try and get some ZZZZZZZ!

Currently July

It's that time again to take part in Farley's Currently.

No, I wasn't really watching the commercial for the NuWave Precision Cooktop, it was only on for background noise. I have really been enjoying the freedom to sleep in. Now that my daughter is 13, she finally lets me sleep in. My daughter has always been an early bird. For the longest time, I could never sleep in past 6:30 a.m. so sleeping until 7:30 or 8:30 a.m. is really a treat!

Looking back from the beginning of June, I really haven't accomplished much. I guess you can say I'm really in that "summer" mode. Might as well enjoy it since it will be over in 30 days!

I live in Arizona and it is blazing hot outside! I can deal with 100 degrees but anything above 105 degrees is too much for me! I don't go outside during the day unless I need to!

For tips, tricks, or hints I have to say my advice is to read as many blogs as you can. I've learned so many "teaching" tips just from reading blogs from all you awesome teachers. Since summer, I've been starting to read blogs that are not teaching related and it's been just as enlightening!

I can't believe another month has gone by! Enjoy your summer and stay cool!

Making a burrito book

My daughter had a very clever teacher two years ago
and one of the things she used often in her class
were "burrito books".

Here's how to make a burrito book...

June Currently

I just love Farley's currently. However, lately I noticed I don't seem to post too much in between each month!

I won't go over explaining listening, loving, thinking, wanting and needing since they are self explanatory. My three vacation essentials are: antibacterial gel/wipes, IPhone and bottled water.

I'm not sure if it's been discussed before but I'm kind of a Germophobe! Please tell me I'm not the only one... but when I check into a hotel I wipe down everything with antibacterial wipes/clorox wipes. The remote controls, light switches, counters, bath and toilet area.

IPhone mainly for taking pictures since I no longer carry a separate camera. I still have the tendency to want to bring a camera but I just can't bring everything with me.

I try and bring as much bottled water as I can if it's a vacation that I'm using my own car. I find the only time I drink a lot of soda is when I'm on vacation so I'm better off bringing bottled water with me.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and relaxing summer break!
