Spring time and the pollen!

I'm really enjoying my R&R time this week. I dropped my daughter off at school, cleaned out the closets (the only time I do this is during my school vacations and summer break), and made another binder cover.
My niece's birthday is coming up. She is also a teacher. I just need to find the right colored binder for it.

I checked the pollen count for my area and pollen is HIGH. I must be allergic to one of these trees: Mulberry, Ash and Poplar/Aspen/Cottonwood. Whenever I leave my house, I start sneezing. I know I'm super allergic to olive tree pollen, which will be blooming soon too. The two things I'm most allergic to are olive tree pollen and cats. So if you have a cat and live next to any olive trees I will never come visit you!

Spring Break Time!

My Spring Break has officially started! One week off - Yippee! The only bummer is my daughter has a completely different Spring Break than I do. My plan is to catch up on some reading, meet up with some friends, and work on my Project Life.

I was truly blessed to participate in an all day Crops of Luv event with my Scrapbook Chicks! I completed three 12x12 two-page layouts (see picture - I covered the faces of the people to respect their privacy). I was proud of myself because I'm very much a novice when it comes to scrapbooking and I've never really made any 12x12 layouts before except for my past participation in Crops of Luv. I really enjoy making scrapbooks for other people but have never managed to make one for myself. I am doing Project Life right now but it's not a traditional scrapbook, it's more or less a picture album. Our group made 19 complete albums today!

Anyhow, I'll probably be up to the midnight hours tonight since I am stuffed from all the food & sweets I ate today. Just imagine a room full of 75-90 women and most of them like to bake yummy treats. It was food overload today! We had a salad potluck and then a "Queen of Sweets" (vote on the best dessert) contest. There were so many sweets after the salad that I couldn't even sample all of them to vote on a winner!

Tomorrow I am going to watch The Hunger Games. I read all the books over the summer. I usually don't enjoy a movie if I've read the book first (except for Harry Potter). I have noticed in the last five years that I am very picky where I sit in a movie theater. I like to sit on an aisle seat and 3/4 of the way from the top preferably with nobody directly behind me or in front of me (not going to happen tomorrow). I think half the reason I go to movies now days is just for the buttered popcorn. Most of the time I can wait for the movie to come out on DVD. I think my husband realizes this and that's why he bribes me with popcorn whenever he suggests a movie!

Since I have some extra time this week, I was thinking about putting up my "Poking through the dictionary" worksheets (dictionary/guide word practice). Leave me a comment if you are interested.

Kohl’s Lowe’s what’s the difference and a little story about "Plantphobia"

After we ate dinner tonight by husband says to me “Cindy, you want to go to Kohl’s?” and I was thinking why does he want to go there? but “Yes, I’ll go with you.” We are all in the car (husband, daughter, me) and I notice that my husband doesn’t make the left turn to the correct street to get to Kohl’s so I say “You know, you just missed the street” and he says “No, I’m going the right way” and I say “No, Kohl’s is on that street.” He turns to me and says “Oh, did I say Kohl’s? I meant to say Lowe’s.” I was a wee bit irritated because if I had known he was going to go to Lowe's I would have said “Have fun, I’m staying home.” It’s not that I don’t like Lowe’s because I do; I just wasn’t in the mood to go there tonight. Okay, yes both the stores do rhyme Kohl’s/Lowe’s but I’m wondering did he really not realize he said Kohl’s instead of Lowe’s or did he just want company and knew I wouldn’t go if he told me he was really going to Lowe’s?

It’s time to tell a little “Kaylee” (my daughter) story.  When Kaylee was three years old we were visiting a friend’s house and she had to use the bathroom. The bathroom had this large purple plant, see picture (it looked like this but much fuller). No big deal, right? Well, as Kaylee was washing her hands the air conditioner went on and the plant was facing the vent. All of a sudden the plant started waving back and forth like crazy. She started screaming and crying that the plant was attacking her. We got out of the bathroom and the rest of the time we were at our friend’s house she wouldn’t go near the bathroom. Ever since that faithful day, Kaylee has been afraid of plants. We call this “Plantphobia”.  Fast forward to 2012, Kaylee is now 12 years old. We are at Lowe’s tonight (not by choice) and the entrance (outside and inside) is surrounded by plants. She turns to me and says “Um, I don’t think I want to go inside”. I say “Why not?” and she points and says “Look at all the plants”. This Plantphobia has plagued us for nine years now. She won’t go to Michael’s even though she knows the plants are plastic/silk, she won’t go in any public or private bathroom if there is a plant or flower in it, and forget going to a plant nursery. We’ve had several talks over the years as to what exactly she is afraid of but it still hasn’t changed how she feels. Do you think this “Plantphobia” will last much longer?

Finally at Gold Level and a freebie!

I’m ashamed to admit that this makes me giddy! I have been paying an extra sixty cents every time I purchase coffee for YEARS! I did quit drinking coffee for about 2 years but lately it’s my once a week guilty pleasure. In fact, I was such a regular at my local Starbucks that I was like Norm from Cheers. When I walked in the door they would say “Good Morning Cindy, the usual?” Anyhow, I was out of the loop for quite some time about the rewards program. Some nice Starbucks employee was kind enough to inform of their rewards program last year. I had no idea it existed since I stopped drinking coffee and eliminated Starbucks from my daily route to work. It was like I was living in a cave for a few years. I actually only crave coffee in the winter months, which is not too many months of the year in Arizona. Anyhow, I finally made gold status this week, just in time because the cold weather is just about out of here in my neck of the woods.

On another note - don’t you just hate when you make an error on your homework? One of my parents was kind enough to point that out to me this morning. I spend about 4 hours a week creating standard based math homework every week. I also create daily math review each week too. I do appreciate the fact that they were helping their child with the homework and they came across my error. I also appreciate they let me know so I could fix it. This was one of those “I don’t have any time to proof my work because I’m too busy doing all this other stuff for school” moments. I was super busy putting together a presentation of all my data from recent benchmark tests for my principal last week that I didn’t take the time to proof my work with a fine-tooth comb. It just goes to show how busy we are as teachers. Okay, here’s a freebie Daily Math Review. Don’t be too hard on me if there’s an error!

I'm officially a National Board Certified Teacher Candidate

With a click of a mouse and two months of classes I have officially become a National Board Certified Teacher Candidate. I have wanted to do this for a while but the timing was never quite right. I’m trying to get all my things in order to qualify for a scholarship to help pay for the fees. The first step was taking a pre-candidacy course, which I just got done taking last week. I also have to attend various workshops over the summer and commit to meeting with a small group over the course of the following school year. I’m sure I’ll vent blog about my journey this upcoming year.

Grading day and Black Friday Paper Day - Oh My!

Today marks the end of the third quarter for my district. What I thought would be a relaxing morning quickly turned into a Black Friday mob scene in the storage closet on the side of my wing. Every grading day we are given a box of copy paper to hopefully last us until next quarter. The secretary of the school was kind enough to deliver my box to me this morning. At about 9:30am she announces on the intercom "If you want colored copy paper, please help yourself in the storage closet". I shot out of my seat and walked (very quickly) to the location. Teachers came from every direction. Soon the whole storage closet was full of people grabbing and breaking open boxes taking as much reams of paper they could hold. It was like a Black Friday Walmart scene. Not only could we take as much colored reams of paper we wanted there was also tag board, chart paper, and binders. I bravely left the frenzy to help my pregnant colleague carry her paper back to her room. By doing so, I missed getting the lined 24x36 chart paper. I have to admit I am not proud of my actions today but I now have a collection of assorted colors of copy paper to last me a few years.

Lesson Plan Binders

I had two former college students that did their method classes with me last semester. They are currently student teaching this semester. Tomorrow they both take over full responsibility of the class they are student teaching in (one of them is with me). I thought I'd make them a little gift.

The back of the binder was pinterest inspired but I redesigned it using my own crown and a different typeface. The front is my attempt at digiscrapping. I'm not very good at it yet. I'm not loving the typeface because it's all lowercase letters but it was free so, I can't complain too much.

I'm sorry I haven't been the best blogger. One of these days I'll get better at it!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday afternoon!
