Holiday Craft Ideas

Happy Holidays! I'm finally on my holiday break! It was a busy first semester but it sure went by fast! I thought I would share what I made for my co-workers.

Altered matchboxes. Little holiday purses.

The kitchen table taken over by crafting supplies

I went a little crazy with the owls! (Sing the song.... "one of these owls is
not like the others, one of these owls, does not belong"). Can you spot it??

Close up of the owl

The owl bags were SUPER easy to make. I just filled them up with candy. Wishing everyone a restful holiday break!

12 in 12 Linky

I'm linking up with Miss Kindergarten and A Teeny Tiny Teacher

Here are my favorites from 2012

12. Favorite movie you watched:
The Hunger Games. If you have read my blog you know my daughter is a major Hunger Games fan. She convinced me to read the books too.Since we both read the books, we had to see the movie too!

11. Favorite TV series:
I haven’t had cable for over 10 years. I really don’t watch TV too often. I mainly watch things on Netflix. It all seems “new” to me but really half the stuff I watch has been on TV for a LONG time.

10. Favorite restaurant:
La Parrilla Suiza. A local Mexican restaurant. I love the Tortilla soup! It’s delicious!

9. Favorite new thing you tried:
The spicy mayo that you eat with sushi. I can’t get enough of that stuff when I eat sushi!

8. Favorite gift you got:
My Iphone! I always knew I'd like an Iphone. It's like night and day compared to my Android!

7. Favorite thing you pinned: This just makes me smile!

6. Favorite blog post:
Last week of summer vacation. mainly because I shared all my management signs and there are 1193 repins of my photo of my signs on pinterest.

5. Best accomplishment:
Best accomplishment for 2012 is being able to do Zumba again. I tore a tendon in my foot in March and seriously thought I would never be able to do Zumba again. It’s been almost 10 months and I have been going to Zumba for a month now twice a week. My foot still gets sore but it’s more than I ever thought I’d be able to do again.

4. Favorite picture: My daughter surprised me on my birthday!

3. Favorite memory:
Back in September, we decided as a family to have a “No Technology Time” in our household for an hour. That means no TV, phones, computers. During “No Technology Time” we come together as a family and just hang out together. Many of my favorite memories are from this time because it is our silliest moments as a family.

2. Goal for 2013:
Continue with “No Technology Time” with my family

It's beginning to feel like winter....

If you have noticed in many of my monthly currently updates, I mention the weather often. Mainly that it's not cool where I live. Today was the first day in many many months that I was actually cold most of the day. I think if the outside air fan would have stopped turning on all day in my room I would have felt warmer. I was beginning to think I could hang meat in my room because it felt so cold. Yes, I did try and turn on the heater but it never kicked on.

When I got off work I turned on the seat warmers and turned on the car heater. I guess this is why it's good I don't live in a place that gets cooler weather, I apparently can't handle it! Wishing everyone a great week!

Currently - December

Wow, it's hard to believe it's the last month of 2012! I think every year goes by a little faster. I'm linking up with Farley Oh'BoyFourthGrade.

I think "wanting" on the last two months have been the same - cooler weather!!

Math Freebie

I kick started my morning with some Zumba. For those of you that have tried Zumba, you know it takes about 2-3 weeks with the same instructor to get "the hang of it". Well, my regular instructor was on vacation today and the substitute instructor gave a good workout but out of 40+ people in the room, only 3 people could follow her. I looked and felt like I had two left feet through the entire class. The music was a wee bit too loud even with my earplugs! I'm a little surprised that nobody else wears earplugs. Do these people not realize that they are exposing themselves to irreversible hearing damage?

Anyhow, I've been working with a third grade class with fractions. The students are having a tough time comparing and modeling fractions on a number line.

What ideas do you have for modeling fractions on a number line?

Fraction Freebie

First off, I hope all my East Coast blogging friends and family are safe and okay!! Wow, another month come and almost gone! At my school, Halloween and Valentine's Day are the holidays the students and families go all out on. We have an annual Halloween parade around the neighborhood with a marching band and firetruck. It's a big event at my school!

My costume - Flo from Progressive Insurance

The next few weeks, the focus in math will be fractions. I made this graphic organizer for students to practice multiple ways of drawing fractions. I hope you can use this in your classroom.

Make It Monday

Last Friday the scrapbook club I hang out with once a month came up with a clever Owl paper bag craft.

It was very simple and so cute! I can see this being used in a classroom as a surprise for the birthday student or a cute way to leave a note to your student. The paper you use for this project can be customized for a boy or a girl. Here are some owl sayings I found.

Monday Made It #1

I'm linking up with Tara from 4th Grade Frolics. I showed this yesterday buy I'll explain how I made it.

All I used to make this was: my cricut, scrapbook paper, adhesive, smashbook tape, ruler, dry erase board, and some left over scrapbook flowers.  I just measured the dry erase board and split it up evenly 5 x 7 squares, put the smashbook tape down, use the cricut to make the numbers and letters, and added a cute flower on the side. Very easy!

Afternoon Project

Here's my afternoon project. It measures about 22x35.

I have really missed my pocket chart calendar I always had in my classroom. This calendar is on a large magnetic dry erase board. I will be able to write on it to remember important meetings. The best part? It's so huge I can see it across the room.

I enjoyed my Sunday morning by being abused by a personal trainer at my new gym this morning. As you all know, I'm still recovering from my tendon injury so lower body weights is something I'm staying away from. I fully explained my concern with my trainer. His response "well, since we can't work your lower body, I'm going to kill your upper body today" Gee, thanks! and that he did. Yeah, I wasn't planning on using my arms for anything the rest of this week anyways!?!

Last week was pure craziness at school. The good news was all the fourth and fifth grade classes were able to get online at the same time and take the benchmark tests with their laptops. Since it appears the air conditioner is never going to be fixed in my office, I ended up moving my office to an empty classroom. My 7th move but hey, who's counting! I forgot how wonderful air conditioning is at school in this endless Arizona heat.

I have to admit, I do love the sunsets in the Arizona desert!

A great message to remember

Last night I had too much caffeine way too close to bedtime. So wouldn't you know it, I couldn't fall asleep. I decided to spend my time I couldn't sleep checking out TED. TED is a "nonprofit devoted to Ideas worth spreading." If you've never taken the time to look at it, it's worth checking out.

One speaker I really enjoyed was Mark Bezos. I hope you enjoy the message as much as I did.

Watching a little piece of history

I had the chance to watch the Space Shuttle Endeavour fly across the sky today piggyback on top of a giant plane.

My friend took a great picture of this event. My picture didn't turn out quite so great from my phone!?! All the kids were on the playground anxiously awaiting the fly by. It was so cute to watch the students run across the field following the direction of the plane.

It was ones of those days I wished I was still in the classroom so I could give a lesson on this historical site we witnessed :(

Although I didn't get to give a lesson on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, I did get to work with the students today on what to expect next week with our Benchmark testing online! Yes, we are doing our testing online this year with fourth and fifth. All the years I spent in third, I taught test strategy skills but only with paper and pencil. underlining, crossing out obvious wrong answers to eliminate, highlighting,  go back and check your work, show all your work, etc. So I'm curious how this online testing will work. Anyone else testing online?

Let me count the ways...

As you know, I am a former Starbucks junkie. I don't go quite as much as I use to. I'm no longer a "regular" anymore (when the employees know your name and your drink when you step in the door, you know you go there too often - just saying!?!)

I've been amused lately by the names they have been writing on my cup. A couple weeks ago my name looked like this. I actually didn't give them my name, they just decided my name was "Silvy".

Last night my name looked like this.

Well, at least they got my first name correct this time. They only other way I've seen "Cindy" spelled is "Cindi". I think next time I go to Starbuck's I'll tell them my name is "Cynthia", just to see how creative they can get with spelling that name.
